Sagaponack Surf Shack

just steps from the beach

What started as an investment project turned into a love affair. As we studied the history and style of this 1969 Adirondack inspired barn the Owner became more and more enamored with it’s quaint feel, and hip vibe. Just steps from the beach, we imagined it as a surf shack; at once upscale and toned down. To add living space we lifted the house in the air (with help from Davis Building Movers) and made a whole new, deeper basement. We removed the 1980’s greenhouse addition and instead gave it a mudroom with a sloped cedar roof, matching the opposite side. We turned the storage shed into a screened-in porch.

Although this is a gut renovation, great care is being taken to reuse the existing materials to preserve the natural patinas of age. All new materials selected are intended to be complementary; hand made Moroccan tiles with uneven textures, leathered stones, terrazzo tiles, reused hardware and an amazing array of antique lighting selected by the Interior Designer, Katie Leede. On the exterior we used Eastern Redcedar, green painted windows to match the existing, and a brownstone coping at the window wells and the pool’s edge. Charlie Marder has designed a whimsical curving hedge around the pool, and several destination locations on this narrow lot.

This project is still under construction - but we can’t wait to show you the finished product!
