Industrial Book Shelves

Born by necessity - and a desire to make something myself, without the luxury of a woodshop - I came up with this quick idea for bookshelves that would suit my needs. I built two - one for either side of the TV, creating a sense of verticality, and drawing your eyes upward. On the right-hand side is a radiator - so buying stock furniture for this wall would have been difficult - I needed something custom but at a reasonable price. I found a nice reclaimed woodshop where I could get wood that was reclaimed from a barn, rough sawn and cut to size, and I asked them to leave the rough, worn, aged edge on the side - which is in tune with the industrial design. The plumbing pipes are fittings you can find at a hardware store - and the pipes run through the shelves on the front side only, with rear supports that are held up by the strength of the pipes alone. The shelves are attached to the wall at the top and stand on the wood floor. This was a fun project that - with the help of friends - only took a few hours.
